First time I heard of Kasey Smith, the artist formerly known as Romance On A Rocketship was on Myspace many moons ago. I thought his sound was equally as eccentric as he was and just knw that was he beginning of this talented musical gem's journey.
Very few musicians are able to navigate the monster that is the LA music scene and survive, the talented Mr. Smith not only has survived it but, thrived where others have been eaten alive, craving a path and niche all his own.
Smith, now called Kasey Roar proves yet, again his talent as a musician by switching genres to more of rock sound with the release of his latest E.P. effort, "Steal The World". The album not only retains his usual charm but, adds layers of romanticism and grit while focusing squarely on his clearly evolved and beyond remarkable voice.
Doesn't matter what lane he's in, Kasey Smith is hear to stay and playing by his own rules.
Kasey, it's been a while since we last talked. What you been up to lately?
I have just been working on music like always. I have been working on music for other people as well as myself. I've also been getting into videography. It's something I've always wanted to do, so it has been exciting.
I noticed you aren't using the "Romance On A Rocketship" name these days, what caused the change?
I just needed to work on something new & fresh for now. I started Romance as a side project while I was in another band. It ended up becoming my main project very quickly. To be completely honest, I wasn't ready for it. About a year later, I signed a major label deal.
That's when things really got crazy. I moved to L.A., & I was in a recording studio 75% of the time for a year & a half. Even though they never got released due to the label falling apart for a while, I wrote & recorded hundreds of songs. Doing so much so quickly without actually being able to put it out into the world was frustrating. It burned me out on what I was doing.
I'm not saying I will never release anything as Romance On A Rocketship again, but for now, I just needed a change.
I'm curious, how does your sound now differ from your "Romance" days?
Currently, I am working on rock music. There is still a pop element to it, but it's not bubbly dancey music like before. Some of the songs even fall into the hard rock genre. It has been nice to do something different after doing the same thing for so many years. Rock music has always been my first love, so it just feels right. I have a rock EP coming out on December 3rd & a few cover songs to follow. Who knows, I might even put out some hip hop music next. I'm crazy.
Sometime ago you did an EP with Steven Jerzak called "Dance & Drive", how did that come about?
My first Romance tour was with him, & we lived in L.A. at the same time after signing our record deals, so we always stayed somewhat connected. He just hit me up one day about doing a collab EP, & I thought it was a great idea. He came to my house, & we knocked it out in a work week. Him & I work really well together.
How do you think you've grown creatively as an artist from when you started out?
When I started writing my first few pop songs, I didn't really know what I was doing. I went from metal-core to pop music, so it was kind of a strange transition. But by my 3rd song (Skin & Bones), I became comfortable with it, & things really started taking off. Like I said before, after moving to L.A., I was in a songwriting session more often than not. That really helped enhance my skills as a songwriter. I'm comfortable with any genre now, & I'm working on a career as a songwriter.
Give the readers a view into your world, what is a normal day in Kasey's eyes like?
My days & nights are generally backward (vamp life). They mostly consist of songwriting, graphic design, online shopping/surfing, videography, food, drinks, cats, & Netflix.
I'm guessing since the last time we talked that your now officially off the market. Am I right?
You are correct. I have been with my girlfriend for a little over a year now. [Laughs]
What new albums have you been sinking your teeth into lately and loving it?
I generally listen to older music, but Bring Me the Horizon's newest album (Sempiternal) really impressed me.
Final question - if you were trapped in an alternate universe, what three things must you have?
I actually am trapped in an alternate universe. I like to have a computer with internet access, an iPhone (for communication, to document my experiences with the cameras, & to act as my portable source of music), & my girlfriend (everyone needs a sidekick in an alternate universe). [Laughs]
